Exceptional Human Experience (EHE) is a term created by Rhea White to describe uncommon and powerful experiences that have the potential for great meaning and profound life impacts. They carry with them the potential for transformation personally. According to White, some of the major categories of EHE's include; (White 1997).
Mystical-Mystical generally refers to unitive experiences or connection that is farther reaching and more complete than normal.
Psychic-Psychic refers to obtaining knowledge in a way that is not average or normal, such as in ESP.
Encounter-This can be an encounter with an animal, another being on this planet, a deceased person or with an alien being. Ghost experiences could fall in here.
Unusual death-related-Near death experiences are an example here.
Exceptional Normal Experiences-This category is for any experience that moves in some way beyond normal awareness, such as Deja Vu, Synchronicity or powerful meditative or sports induced experiences.
I'd like to invite people to share this week. Have you ever had an EHE experience? What happened? Which category would the experience fall into in your opinion? Were you able to integrate this experience and benefit from it or not and why?

Mike, I have had many unusual human experiences over the years, of various exceptional levels.
One experience was with an unseen personage. I went into an old college building that used to be a student dormitory. Two floors of the building was now used for classes. The third floor was unused. I went to the 2nd floor office alone on a summery Sunday afternoon. My purpose was to make my office ready for my new position as a counseling intern. I carried with me an electric sander and some furniture polish to spiff up the old desk in my office.
I was sanding away on the desk when suddenly my heart started hammering and I felt a terrifying sense of a presence outside the closed door. I felt outrage and a threatening energy outside the door. I immediately shut off the sander and waited. I FELT the presence move away and the energy return to a vacant emptiness in the hallway. I knew it was okay now to open the door, which I did after hastily grabbing my sander and other equipment. I quickly exited the building, knowing it was desirable to leave immediately.
The next day I mentioned to one of the staff my experience. He was not surprised. Seems a ghost of a student who killed himself on the third floor years ago had been felt by many other staff as well.
There was a time in my life when I used to say to people, "you read my mind." It was like I had experienced the conversation or moment before in complete detail: what was said, what we were wearing, what the environment was. Over time I came to realize that they were not "reading my mind," I had had a premonition of these experiences and they were happening just as I had felt/seen them. I have come to see these experiences as road signs along my path. A reminder that I am on my path. I don't put much weight to them anymore, but still get excited inside when they happen. I feel connected to source energy and a part of something I can never truly understand. I think this would fall in the category of Psychic.
Interestingly enough, at the same time in my life, I had asked the spirits who "show up" to please stop. Having psychic abilities before I was comfortable with them made me feel weird, misunderstood, scared, unsettled, and fearful of my own power.
This year is the first time I have called back to the spirit world to reconnect with my psychic abilities. I am ready to receive extrasensory information with balance and ease. I have support people now to speak to about these experiences, where before I felt isolated and alone. As I have started the new year with this intention the first sensory perception to heighten is my intuition. I simply know things...without being told. It is a lively endeavor and I look forward to the unfolding.
I appreciate this place to share.
Much Luv
Mike,
I have had lots of EHE's throughout my life - especially dreams that come true and deja vu.
However the most poignant was a time when I was in high school and had a dream about my deceased grandfather and my father (whom I was living with at the time). I had a dream that we were all just sitting around the kitchen table and talking. Normal conversation, normal for us, sweet, informative, full of love. In the morning I came downstairs and my dad said "I had a dream about you last night. You and my dad.". I said "That's crazy I had a dream about your and grandpa last night too! We were sitting around talking about....."
Well, as it turns out, we had the exact same "dream". It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life.
I love your blog. Thank for being here.
Marti-
Thanks for your comment. I can always tell when I am encountering a ghost or other worldly human presence because the hair on the back of my neck stands straight up and I feel a distinct and sort of spotty chill. By spotty I mean the cold area is specified to a small area rather than the overall air temperature. Oftentimes I have been with others who see glimpses of someone standing nearby, but for me, its usually more like a feeling that someone else is there. I do not always feel threatened, but usually a little nervous simply because I don;t know what's going on. What makes such experiences useful is allowing them to change or teach us in some way I think. Anyway, thanks again!
Hi Cyn!
I'm so glad that you have made the choice to integrate psychic guidance into your life again. I also think it was healthy that at some point you were able to shut it down because you felt that you were perhaps not fully prepared to recieve that much information or accept the societal consequences of tapping something that resides outside what is considered healthy or normal. I guess that's why they call it para normal activity. I submit though that choosing to reclaim or open again to guidance from a more expansive level of awareness or the experience of an EHE is much more unitive or integral to being human than our culture would choose to accept. Such experiences have been a part of our history since the origins of our species on this planet! Anyway, I am very excited for you this year and can't wait to watch the benefits of your EHE experiences unfold and transform your reality.
Thanks for your comment!
Briana-
Thanks for joining the dialogue! Welcome!
Shared dreaming can be a very powerful EHE experience indeed and it sounds to me like the integration of this experience into your life and reflection on it over the years has been very beneficial to you. That's the difference from simply experiencing an altered state and having an EHE. An EHE transforms or changes you in some way as it is integrated into your life. In this sense, it is not only the powerful experience that you had, but the act of sharing the story with your family and friends over the years and honoring the experience that provides you with transpersonal growth and well being.
Thanks for joining in! Hope to see you again on here!
